The Three Gorges Dam at night

The Three Gorges Dam in the Yangtze River at Sandouping, a city in the region Yichang, in the southwest of Hubei district, is the largest hydroelectric river dam in the world.

On June 1, 2003, the reservoir began filling, and will occupy a part of the scenic Three Gorges Area between the cities of Yichang and Fuling (Chongqing district).

The construction of the dam started in 1994 and the structural work was finished in May, 2006. In 2009 the dam is expected to be fully operational.
